Paul picked up the book Uncle Tom’s Cabin that was sitting on the kitchen table.

Paul: Wasn’t this written by that woman who freed the slaves?

Me: No, it was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe.

Paul: Then who was the woman who helped free the slaves?

Me: Um, Sojourner Truth?

Paul: No, the other one. With the railroad.

Me: Harriet Tubman?

Paul: She’s not the same one who wrote this?

Me: No

Paul: Then who is Harriet Beecher Stowe?

Me: She wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Paul, disappointed: Oh, she’s just an author. He looks at the cover. Doesn’t Uncle Tom represent America?

Me: No. I launch into a description of what an “Uncle Tom” is in popular usage, then go on to describe what it means when you call someone “Simon Legree.”

Paul: But I thought Uncle Tom was America. You know, all dressed in red, white, and blue.

Me: You mean Uncle Sam?

Paul: Oh.

Me: Not the same guy. You’re oh-for-two on this one. Do you want to keep swinging or go on to another topic?

Paul: Did you know that I only ate 3 brownies and you ate 8?

I don’t know how he does it but he always ends up on top.
